Alberta Human Footprint Monitoring Program (AHFMP) - Footprint Sublayers - Circa 2014

The Alberta Human Footprint Monitoring Program (AHFMP) is collaboration between the following organizations: Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) The Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) GeoDiscover Alberta Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AAF) Alberta Energy (AE) Various non-government organizations. The goal of the AHFMP is to improve the accuracy of the human footprint data and to focus expertise from the various organizations on a single footprint product. Currently AEP and ABMI co-lead the program. The AHFMP stratifies footprint features into footprint sublayers based on logical groupings. Roads, oil and gas well pads, rail lines, gravel pits, agriculture fields are examples of sub layers. Where possible, the AHFMP will obtain features for these sub layers directly from authoritative sources. For example, harvest areas are provided by the Forest Management Branch of AAF. In these cases the data authority are responsible for the distribution of the sub-layer. Only when the features are not available from an authoritative source will the AHFMP create their own data. The Joint Canada-Alberta Implementation Plan and Objectives.

The purpose of the joint implementation plan is to describe how the Governments of Alberta and Canada will put in place a world class monitoring program for the oil sands to provide assurance of environmentally responsible development of the resource.

The Plan has a number of objectives:

  • Support sound decision-making by governments as well as stakeholders
  • Ensure transparency through accessible, comparable and quality-assured data
  • Enhance science-based monitoring for improved characterization of the state of the environment and collect the information necessary to understand cumulative effects
  • Improve analysis of existing monitoring data to develop a better understanding of historical baselines and changes
  • Reflect the trans-boundary nature of the issue and promote collaboration with the Governments of Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories

    Regional Plans

    The Act enables government to provide direction and leadership in identifying current and future land-use objectives of the Province, including economic, environmental and social objectives, while respecting private property rights. The Act provides for the coordination of decisions concerning land, species, human settlement, natural resources and the environment while taking into account cumulative effects of human endeavours and other events.
